Over One Thousand Migrants Go Missing in Central Mediterranean

(MENAFN) Up to 1,000 migrants may have gone missing in the central Mediterranean amid extreme weather caused by Cyclone Harry in mid-January, according to the Italian NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans.

The organization said testimonies collected from refugees in Libya and Tunisia suggest the incident could be one of the deadliest tragedies in recent years along the central Mediterranean migration route, criticizing Italian and Maltese authorities for a lack of information and insufficient rescue efforts. “The contours of the greatest tragedy in recent years are taking shape along the central Mediterranean routes, and the governments of Italy and Malta remain silent and do nothing,” said Laura Marmorale, president of Mediterranea Saving Humans.

Official messages transmitted via satellite by Rome's Maritime Rescue Coordination Center reported at least 380 people missing at sea as of January 24. The alerts covered eight separate search and rescue cases involving boats that departed from Sfax, Tunisia, between January 14 and 21, carrying approximately 380 migrants, including women and children. As of that date, none of the vessels had been located, and no confirmed rescues were reported.

The departures coincided with severe conditions in the central Mediterranean, with waves exceeding 7 meters (22 feet) and wind gusts over 54 knots, linked to Cyclone Harry. The NGO described these as some of the most dangerous maritime conditions recorded in the region in the past 20 years. No further updates have been issued by European maritime authorities since then.
