Italy Examines Complaints Linked to Arrest of Gaza Aid Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) Italian prosecutors have begun investigating Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over allegations related to the treatment of activists detained after participating in a humanitarian flotilla heading toward Gaza.

According to reports, the inquiry is being handled by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office and centers on Ben-Gvir’s alleged conduct toward activists who were held at the Port of Ashdod while restrained with their hands tied behind their backs.

The investigation is also reviewing the broader actions of Israeli authorities during the interception of the flotilla and the subsequent detention of its participants, among whom were several Italian citizens.

According to reports, prosecutors are evaluating accusations that include alleged torture and kidnapping.

The development follows an earlier investigation launched by Rome prosecutors into the detention of Italian nationals after Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters near Greece in April. That case was opened after three formal complaints were submitted.

According to reports, the most recent operation against the Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla occurred in mid-May in international waters. Footage broadcast live from the vessels showed Israeli naval forces moving to intercept the convoy.
