Ex-Italian PM Slams Europe’s Foreign Policy Approach Toward US, China

(MENAFN) Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has criticized Europe’s current diplomatic posture toward the United States, arguing that the continent behaves too submissively in its dealings with US President Donald Trump and lacks a coherent approach toward China, according to reports.

Speaking at the Festival dell’Economia di Trento, Prodi said European countries “act like servants” when engaging with Washington while simultaneously struggling to define a consistent strategy in dealing with Beijing.

He called for stronger unity within the European Union, stressing that the bloc must develop a more coordinated and collective ability to respond to global challenges.

“Europe should have a unified capacity for intervention,” Prodi said, emphasizing the need for a more integrated European foreign and strategic policy.

His remarks come amid renewed tensions in transatlantic relations during Trump’s second term, with disagreements emerging between the United States and Europe over trade policies, security priorities, and broader geopolitical strategy.
